A Finn this afternoon admitted to causing an accident in Great Siege Road late on Monday evening after he got mixed up with driving directions and swerved to the wrong side, smashing into an oncoming taxi.

Jyrki Juhani Sinisalo, 46, from Helsinki, also pleaded guilty to seriously injuring his partner, Danish national Sureka Dullay, who suffered a fractured leg and a fractured hipbone.

The accident happened at around 11pm after the couple dined in Valletta and then went for a walk around the city. As they were exiting the city on their motorcycle, Mr Sinisalo saw the oncoming taxi as he was manoeuvring a bend, got confused and swerved to the wrong side.

Magistrate Anthony Vella said this was an “unfortunate” incident and conditionally discharged the man for six months.

The charge of negligent driving was withdrawn by the prosecution which also informed the court that damages were being settled through the insurance company.

Coincidentally, both vehicles were insured by the same firm.

Police Inspector Daryl Borg prosecuted.
