PN says there should be no discrimination on power cut compensation, PL reacts

Malta Independent Friday, 22 August 2014, 16:41 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Nationalist Party today said there should be no discrimination between businesses and households in compensation given for power cuts.

The PN said the €25 payment which the government would give ‘some people’ after last week’s blackout was not compensation, but payment for people to remain silent.

Spokesman George Pullicino said this was exposed by the fact that the government chose to compensate households but not businesses, which had suffered thousands of euros in damages.

Last week’s blackout had not been seen for many years, the PN said, and the government should not discriminate between domestic and business consumers.

In reply, the PL said the PN is being hypocritical in its criticism of the blackout compensation promised by the government.  The Labour Party said the PN government had not only increased energy tariffs but also awarded its ministers a €500 weekly raise.

The compensation due to be given by the Labour government is a show of responsible politics.  PN MP George Pullicino had better give an explanation on the conclusions of the Auditor General’s report on WasteServ procurement , the PL said.
