Medical Association files judicial protest against UoM

Malta Independent Friday, 1 August 2014, 11:23 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Medical Association of Malta (MAM) has filed a judicial protest against the University of Malta, The University of Medical Staff Association (UMASA) and the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) over renewal of a collective agreement, arguing that it is being excluded from current negotiations, and being discriminated against.

The MAM argued that as a registered trade union, it has a right to represent academic staff who are part of its union. While UMASA is composed of 293 members, MAM has over 400 members, including university academics.

The medical association represents 90% of all academics who lecture at the medical school within the University of Malta, and thus, it constitutes an appropriate collective bargaining unit.  MAM argued it is the only association having the required expertise to safeguard specialized interests in the medical field.

In the judicial protest, MAM state, that should the collective agreement be signed, its validity will be questioned, as UMASA and MUT have no sole right to sign in the name of  university academic staff.

The MAM appealed that negotiations are halted immediately.
