New Bone Anchored hearing devices implanted at Mater Dei Hospital

Malta Independent Thursday, 24 July 2014, 18:58 Last update: about 11 years ago
The Department of Otolaryngology and Audiology of Mater Dei Hospital has introduced a new surgically implanted device for hearing loss. This device, the Alpha2 MPO produced by Sophono, a U.S. company represented locally by A.T.G. Co. Ltd., is suitable for the rehabilitation of different forms of hearing loss. The device requires the surgical insertion of a special metal implant which is anchored on bone and buried under the skin behind the ear. Once the wound has healed the hearing processor can magnetically attach to the implant. This innovative device offers several advantages to the patient, both in terms of comfort and in function. The first two surgeries were carried out successfully on the 21st July by Mr Mario Said, consultant otologist, and his team. The postoperative rehabilitation will be carried out by Dr Andrew Sciberras, senior audiologist at Mater Dei Hospital. Both Mr Said and Dr Sciberras obtained specific training on the Sophono devices in Germany. It is hoped that this new surgical intervention will be helping some 10 to 15 persons with disability every year.
